Yes… That Boyz II Men. The 90’s R&B sensation labeled as the best selling R&B group of all time.  When you think of Human Resources do you think of the 90s R&B sensation Boyz II Men? No? Well in a few minutes you will understand just what I'm talking about…

If you are not familiar with Boyz II Men they have been given the distinction of the best-selling R&B group of all time with an amazing 60 million albums sold.  Chart topping hits include : “End of the Road,” “Motownphilly,” and “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday” to name a few.

So why would Boyz II Men of all sources educate me on Human Resources?

For the purposes of this article we'll just dive into one reason and one song specifically - “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday.” See media player below for a quick listen if this 1991 classic is not top of mind.

If you listen to the lyrics they are very powerful when thinking about the health, wellness, and growth of your company. As a business owner, department head, or executive you constantly need to evaluate where you have been to forecast where you can go.

You need to be continually evaluating your team, your progress and vision.

I don't know where this road
Is going to lead
All I know is where we've been
And what we've been through.”

The one department where this takes root the most, which may be a surprise, is HR.

Human resources is the consistent thread woven across organizations of all sizes; they're integrated with hiring, firing and company culture.

There are many instances where organizations keep employees on who they know are hurting the company more than they are helping because “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye.”

“I thought we'd get to see forever
But forever's gone away
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.”

As a leader, sometimes it's hard to recognize that the team that took you from ABC will typically not be the same team required to get you to XYZ.

You will require different types of skill sets, experiences and optimization but this is where the pain of personal relationships and ties makes it hard to say goodbye.

For those tough decisions wouldn't it be nice if you had a checklist to make sure you are covering all your bases so nothing is missed during the process of employee departure? If so grab a free copy of our employee departure resource.

Being sentimental and sensitive to others is human, but that doesn't mean you should hang on to nostalgia at the expense of your organization. Our checklist will help you let go of those obstacles that are holding you back from getting to the next level.

Remember it’s actually not that hard to say goodbye if you know why and how you are going to do it.
