TPD Provides an HR Solution to Trump’s Travel Ban for U.S. Tech Companies

Last week, the White House confirmed plans to draft an executive order that the tech community is bracing itself for. The order, if successful, would overhaul the H-1B work-visa program that U.S. based tech companies rely on to bring foreign talent onto their team.

The order also calls for greater scrutiny of L-1 visas, given to employees who relocate to the U.S. from a company’s office abroad. The same goes for OPT visas, applicable to international students who wish to remain in the U.S after graduation.

With a potential loss of future entrepreneurs and tech talent, TPD, a diversity certified organization, has a solution for American-based tech companies.

TPD HR Solutions provides cross-border services and contractor payrolling for tech companies based in the U.S. Specifically, TPD does this by facilitating U.S. companies to contract with Canadian residents without needing a physical entity in Canada. At the same time, current foreign exchange rates make it more beneficial for American companies to hire Canadian workers.

But what's the big deal about these H-1B visas anyway?

The H-1B visa program is a common pathway that helps skilled, foreign workers join U.S. companies. The program allows for 85,000 visas to be issued annually, and talented web developers, software engineers, and computer programmers vie for the limited amount every year.

In opposition to the order, tech giants like Facebook, Microsoft, and Apple (and 90 others!) filed an amicus brief, citing that “the Order inflicts significant harm on American business, innovation, and growth’ and that it will also ‘make it more difficult and expensive for U.S. companies to recruit, hire and, retain some of the world’s best employees” – A major blow indeed.

And how does TPD's cross-border payrolling work in practice?

TPD currently supports a Silicon Valley based software client by sourcing tech talent in Canada that meets the client’s stringent job requirements. In addition to sourcing, TPD becomes the Employer of Record, and takes on all duties related to payroll, benefits, onboarding, etc.

The exchange rate allows our U.S. client to capitalize on lower wages, and with TPD taking on the responsibilities of being the Employer of Record, our partnership ensures they can place greater focus on their own business objectives.
