What You Need to Know This Month

The Latest News from Canada:

Canada extends grace period for bosses to rehire workers

Amendments to Canada's labor standards have extended the time period for employers to call back furloughed employees before their temporary layoff becomes a termination. The previous three-month limit has been extended to six months, with the hope of helping employers stay afloat during the pandemic.

Significant number of workers do not feel safe going back to work, poll suggests

A recent survey of BC employees has found that only 20% of workers report feeling "very comfortable" returning to their workplaces, with 44% concerned that their employers aren't taking enough safety precautions to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect staff.

The Latest News from the US:

5 ways to reward employees working from home: Ask HR

Traditional ways of recognizing employee or team achievements, such as a lunch or happy hour, are no longer feasible in today's work-from-home landscape. It's important for employee morale that hard work is rewarded, even while remote.

What the freeze on foreign worker visas means for HR

A new executive order freezes American companies’ ability to hire and recruit foreign national workers to the US. According to the Migration Policy Institute, about 219,000 temporary workers will be blocked by the order. This will impact the talent pool in many industries, including tech and healthcare.
