How Your Employee Handbook Can Reflect Your Company Culture

Although an employee handbook is necessary, even crucial – most employees will never open them.

If the document is integral to the company - Why is this the case?

Frankly, the majority of employee handbooks would put anyone to sleep. They are that boring.

Fortunately for employers hoping their handbooks will actually be utilized, this does not have to be the case.

For example, in addition to their employee handbook, Zappos developed a ‘Culture Book’ that was graphic and truly reflected who they are and what the company represents. The Culture Book is compiled every year and is written by the employees themselves – detailing what Zappos’ company culture means to them.

Like Zappos, there are several ways you can improve your employee handbook to exemplify your company culture and make it more readable (and fun!)

Ditch the legal jargon

Avoid the legal jargon or accusatory language. Seriously. Even though some of your organization’s policies will be legally required – your employee handbook doesn’t have to read like a piece of government legislation.

Instead of being so harsh with your language, write your handbook as a guide. Generally speaking, the language in the document should be conversational rather than sounding like a series of direct orders.

Go in-depth with your mission & values

Think about what makes your business and its goals unique. This should be clearly communicated.

Employees will work harder and work smarter when they know what is expected of them, but also when they can understand and grasp the organization's 'bigger picture' goals.

Include any unique benefits & wellness programs

Look beyond your vacation policy and 401(k) plan. Does your organization offer any special perks - a subsidized transit pass for commuters? A fitness allowance? People DO care about these things.

Company Culture
For example - Fearless Social hosts Fitbit competitions between their employees. For every 10,000 steps that employees take during the week, their name goes into a hat for a random draw. If their name is chosen they get a $50 gift card of their choice!

Don't be afraid to include images in your employee handbook where it makes sense!

Words by themselves can be dry - and including pictures can breathe some life and personality into the document
